Ai Tanaka



Ai Tanaka is a Senior Consultant, Continuous Improvement at HMSA/Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawai'i. She moved to Hawai'i in 2012 to be a super aunty for her nephew, Aiden. At HMSA, she is responsible for providing strategic and transformational leadership to cross-functional teams for a variety of continuous improvement efforts in the company. Prior, she worked for an operations management consulting firm in Connecticut for 15 years, initially starting out in training & organization development roles, then later consulting for small to Fortune 100 manufacturing clients across the U.S., Mexico and Russia to help improve safety, quality and productivity utilizing the Toyota Production System (TPS/Lean). Her passion is not only to build process excellence and efficient systems, but also to foster employee engagement and people development in the process of change. 




Tanya Lee

Past President  

Tanya Lee is the resident Training Geek at Y. Hata & Co., Limited, Hawai'i’s number one food distributor. She is a former Board President of the Financial Education Alliance of Hawai'i, a recipient of the CUNA HR/TD Excellence Award and holds several training certifications. Tanya is an advocate for BIG, BOLD and crAzY learning programs. She is also the Queen of her Castle, mother of two, and an aspiring romance novelist. Makana Risser Chai

VP of Events  


Makana Risser Chai is an attorney who founded a Silicon Valley company to provide programs on HR law compliance and creating respectful workplaces by preventing sexual harassment. She was responsible for curriculum development and instructional design, and delivered more than a thousand programs in 38 states. In 1998, she decided to move to Hawai'i, and is now a certified massage therapist, stress and wellness consultant, forgiveness facilitator, and instructor of yoga and Pilates. She is the author of two books on Hawaiian healing with lomilomi massage, and of Mindful Multitasking: Timeless Techniques for a Vibrant Mind, Strong Body, Happy Heart, and Light Spirit. She presents programs on sexual harassment, instructional design, facilitation skills, Mindful Multitasking, work-life balance, and stress management for corporations and associations.




Shar Carbonell

 VP of Marketing


Shar Carbonell is a Training Specialist at Y. Hata & Co., Limited. Shar loves learning all things relating to talent development and is constantly looking for ways to implement new techniques while facilitating. When attending one of Shar's sessions, don't expect to sit still; she strives to think outside of the box and will keep you on your toes to ensure learning is interesting, engaging, and fun. To keep up with her spunky daughter, Shar competes in bodybuilding contests and shares her passion for health and fitness. Valerie Koenig

 VP of Finance


Valerie Koenig is a coach and facilitator with The Alternative Board Hawaii, a business development and leadership organization. She enjoys working with business owners on peer advisory groups and providing executive coaching. Her MBA is in finance and accounting and she is enjoying learning more about talent development. Lou Darnell

 VP of Membership


Louis (Lou) Darnell is a lifelong learner and finds satisfaction by mentoring, coaching and leading. As a Vistage Executive Peer Advisory Group Chair, his mission is to support CEOs in achieving increased effectiveness and enhancing their quality of life. Lou also Chairs ComTel’s Board of Directors. ComTel is a communications technology company he founded 23 years ago. Prior to starting his business career, Lou served in the US Army for 26 years. During his military career, Lou earned a graduate degree in Organizational Development, served as an organizational effectiveness consultant and introduced process reengineering at the Headquarters of the Pacific Command. As a student at the Army’s senior service college, Lou studied national policy and strategy formulation. While at the Pentagon, Lou was responsible to ensure the integration of strategy, programs and budgeting. 




 Melissa Fitzgerald-Fee

Melissa Fitzgerald-Fee is a Program Manager at HMSA. Melissa and her family moved to Hawai'i in 2015 seeking a new adventure and professional growth. Prior to her move, Melissa was the Director of Community Development in the behavioral health/mental health industry in Iowa. She had the opportunity of leading statewide teams, developing new lines of business, and managing projects to improve the lives of the clients served. Melissa has a passion for strategic thinking, leadership development and helping everyone be the best version of themselves that they can possibly be! Jerome Bautista 

VP of Technology


Jerome Bautista is the Senior Performance and Learning Specialist at HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union where he serves as a performance consultant supporting the learning and development needs of the organization specializing in creation of eLearning content and facilitating instructor led training. Prior to joining HawaiiUSA, Jerome worked for HouseMart ACE Hardware/Ben Franklin Crafts as the Human Resources/Training and Development Coordinator. Jerome is a designated SHRM-CP (SHRM-Certified Professional), has an MA in Organizational Development and Change, is the President for the Walkie Talkies Toastmasters, and is also on the Board for the Financial Education Alliance of Hawai'i. Jerome is an active volunteer, helping Hawai'i’s community through volunteer work with the Waikiki Neighborhood Board, Waikiki Aquarium, HIHO Hawai'i, and Surfrider Oahu Chapter.
